The Miser and the Coconuts

The miserly merchant heard that coconuts were being sold in Shawq al-Khudhra (Vegetables Market), and he hadn't tasted them for a long time. So, he went there to buy some.

The carpenter arrived at the market and asked the seller, "How much do you charge for a coconut?" The seller replied, "For seven piasters."

The miser replied, "Only for five piasters."

But the seller refused, saying, "I cannot sell it to you for that price. But you can buy it for five piasters from the big market. It is a three-hour journey." So the miserly merchant decided to walk all this distance to save two piasters!

There, he found the fruit for five piasters. So he said to one of them, "I will buy the fruit for three piasters." Piasters."

But this seller also refused, and said to the miser, "You can buy it for three piasters on the beach. There's a seller there who sells it for that amount."

The journey would take another three hours.

When he reached the shore, he asked the seller, "How much will you sell the fruit for?"

The seller replied, "For three piasters." The miser replied, "I will pay only one piaster." The seller refused and said to the merchant, "You can climb the tree and get it for free."

The miserly merchant began to climb the tree,

but halfway up, he stumbled. He fell from the top of the mountain, breaking his leg.

The people carried him to his house. There, the servant, who knew he was stingy, said to him, "Sir, there is a man who is not a doctor and who can treat you for only five hundred piasters. Should I call him?"

The merchant shouted, "Bring me a real doctor, even if it costs ten thousand piasters!"

Because of greed, the miser tried to save two piasters... so he paid thousands!
