استيقظت الطيور في الصباح كعادتها وخرجت من أعشاشها للبحث عن الطعام
وخرجت جماعات العصافير وانتشرت في السماء وانطلق أحد العصافير يبحث
عن مكان فيه الخير الوفير وبدأ يتحرك بمفرده وابتعد عن جماعته التي خرج
.معها. وبينما هو يطير وقعت عيناه على حديقة مليئة بأصناف متعددة من الفاكهة
وتلفت العصفور حوله يبحث عن أصحابه فلم يجد أحداً منهم فدخل الحديقة
بمفرده وأخذ يتنقل بين أشجارها ويأكل من ثمارها.
فكر العصفور في أن يحتفظ لنفس بخيرات هذه الحديقة وأن يمنع باقي الطيور
من الاقتراب منها ومعرفة سرها. فجلس يفكر في حيلة.
وبينما هو يفكر سقط غصن شجرة صغير على صفيحة ملقاة على الأرض فأصدرت
صوتاً مزعجاً فانتفض العصفور من صوتها
وهنا جاءت العصفور فكرة شريرة سيشيع بين الطيور أن هذه الحديقة يحرسها
مارد عملاق شرير يأكل كل طير يذهب إليها .
وخرج العصفور من الحديقة وكان كلما قابل أحداً من الطيور حكى له أمر الحديقة
والمارد الذي يحرسها .
وصدقت الطيور كلام العصفور وأصبح الكل يخاف الاقتراب من هذه الحديقة
والعصفور يذهب إلى هناك كل يوم ويأكل ويستمتع بمفرده بخيراتها وكلما شعر
باقتراب أحد من الحديقة أمسك الغصن بمنقاره وبدأ يطرق به على الصفيحة
بكل قوته ليخيف القادم.
وذات يوم دخل العصفور الحديقة وبدأ يأكل ويأكل ويأكل.... وفي غمرة سعادته
وقف في الهواء يرفرف بجناحيه ويدور حول نفسه وهو يقول: كل هذا ملكي
وحدي. كل هذا الخير لي وحدي وأثناء دورانه حول نفسه ارتطم بشجرة ضخمة وسقط على الأرض وانكسر جناحه. حاول العصفور القيام لكنه لم يقدر
بسبب جناحه المكسور فأخذ يصرخ مناديا أصحابه وهو يقول : انقذوني
انقذوني..
انقذوني..
ولكن لم يسمعه أحد ولم يجد من يجيب نداءه فالحديقة يحرسها مارد والجميع
يخشى الاقتراب منها . وحل المساء والعصفور مازال على حاله يبكي ويصرخ وما
من مجيب وعندما عادت الطيور لأعشاشها لم يجدو صديقهم وقلق الجميع عليه .
خرجت العصافير تبحث عن العصفور الضائع وبينما هم يطيرون سمعوا صوته من
بعيد وهو ينادي ويصرخ.
واقتربت العصافير من مصدر الصوت فوجدوه يأتي من حديقة المارد وظنوا أن المارد
قد أمسكه . فكر بعضهم في الفرار ولكن الأكثرية قرروا أن يجتمعوا ويهاجموا المارد
وينقذوا صديقهم. واجتمعت العصافير وهجموا على الحديقة فوجدوا العصفور
بمفرده ملقى على الأرض وجناحه مكسور فأسرعت العصافير اليه وحملوه خارج
الحديقة وذهبوا به إلى الطبيب كي يعالجه.
شعر العصفور بخطأه فكم كان أنانياً عندما فكر في الاحتفاظ لنفسه فقط
بخيرات الحديقة
واعترف العصفور لأصدقائه بخطأه وقال لهم أنه لا يوجد مارد يحرس
الحديقة وأنه نادم بشدة على ما فعله معهم.
