شَعَرَ رَجُلٌ فَقِيرٌ عَجُوزٌ بِجُوع شديد، فَسَرَقَ
رَغِيفَ خُبْزِ مِنْ بَائِعِ في السُّوقِ
تم القبض على الرجل العجوز وقدم للمحكمة
واعْتَرَفَ هذا الفقيرُ بفعلته ولَمْ يُحاول أنْ
يُنْكَرَهَا
وَقالَ مَرَّ يَوْمَان علي لَمْ أذق فيهما الطَّعَامَ،
وكدْتُ أمُوتُ جُوعًا، لذلكَ سَرَقْتُ رَغيف الخُبْز.
أخَذَ الحُرَّاسُ الفقير للقاضي، وَكَرْرَ نَفْس ما
قَالَهُ لصَاحب الخُبز.
فَقَالَ لَهُ القَاضِي: باعْتِرَافِكَ سَأَحْكُمُ عَلَيْكَ
بدفع خَمْسَةِ دنانير، وأعرفُ أنّكَ لا تَمْلكُها لأنكَ
سَرَقْتَ رَغِيفَ خُبْز، لذلكَ سَأَدْفَعُهَا عَنْكَ.
ثُمَّ قَالَ لِلْحَاضِرِينَ : مَحْكُومَ عَلَى كُلِّ وَاحِدٍ
مِنْكُمْ بِدَفْعِ عَشَرَةِ دَنَانِيرَ.
لأَنَّكُم تَعيشُونَ في بَعْدَهُ يَضْطَرُ فِيهَا الفقير إلى
سرقة رغيف خبز )
ثُمَّ أرْسَلَ طَعَامًا للفقير بالمال الَّذِي جَمَعَهُ.
فَرَحَ الفَقِيرُ بالطَّعَامِ، وَلَكِنَّهُ فَرِحَ أكْثَر بِشُعُور
الآخَرينَ به وَبِشُعُور أبنائه بالأمان، وَتَمَنَّى
منَ الله أنْ يَرْزُقَهُ ليَتَصَدَّقُ عَلَى كُلِّ فَقِير.
A poor old man felt very hungry, so he stole
A loaf of bread from a market vendor
The old man was arrested and brought to court
This poor man admitted to what he had done and did not try to do so
He denies it
He said, “Two days have passed since I did not taste food.”
I almost starved to death, so I stole a loaf of bread.
The guards took the poor man to the judge, and he repeated the same thing
He said it to the bread maker.
The judge said to him: With your confession, I will judge you.
